Editorial assessment
The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is worth considering if your home has rooms that run warmer or cooler than the hallway where the thermostat sits. It ships with one remote SmartSensor that reports temperature and occupancy from another room, and it works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings. A Power Extender Kit is in the box for compatible systems without a C-wire.
What separates the Premium from ecobee's cheaper models is mostly extras: an air quality monitor, a built-in speaker with Alexa or Siri, and a metal and glass body. Tom’s Guide found the air quality monitor and speaker modest. If you only want scheduling, remote control and room sensors, compare ecobee's lower-priced thermostats first.
This is a source-based editorial review. HomeTenet has not documented hands-on testing of this thermostat, so we do not publish numerical scores, measured energy savings, sensor accuracy or response times. Figures below are ecobee's own unless we name another source. Our evidence policy.
Who it suits, and who should skip it
Consider it if you have uneven temperatures between rooms, you want one thermostat that works across Apple Home, Alexa and Google, or you plan to use ecobee's security sensors and cameras with it.
Skip it if you only need a schedule and an app, you have line-voltage heating such as electric baseboards (ecobee lists 24 VAC systems), or you want Matter. Matter does not appear on ecobee's product page for this model.
For a learning schedule and Matter compatibility, compare the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Its remote sensor measures temperature; ecobee’s SmartSensor also detects occupancy. Choose based on your HVAC wiring, preferred app and the rooms you want the thermostat to prioritize.
Installation and wiring
ecobee says the Premium works with most 24 VAC heating and cooling equipment: conventional furnaces and air conditioners up to two heating and two cooling stages, heat pumps with up to two stages of auxiliary heat, boilers, and one accessory such as a humidifier, dehumidifier or ventilator. It publishes a compatibility checker; use it with your wiring before ordering. ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium.
The thermostat is powered through the C and Rc terminals. If your wall has no C-wire, the included Power Extender Kit can be installed on compatible systems at the furnace or air handler so the thermostat can be powered without running a new wire. A trim plate is included to cover marks left by an older thermostat.
Tom's Guide described installation as comparable to other smart thermostats. That is one reviewer's system. Fitting the Power Extender Kit means working inside your HVAC equipment; see the safety note below.
Room sensors and occupancy
One SmartSensor is included, with a stand and a wall mount. It reports temperature and occupancy from a second room, so the thermostat can account for the rooms people are using. The thermostat itself uses radar for occupancy, which ecobee says detects from farther away and around corners and needs no visible lens. ecobee launch announcement, May 17, 2022.
Tom's Guide noted that extra sensors were sold in two-packs, not singly. Check current packs if you want to cover several rooms.
Air quality monitor
ecobee says the monitor reports volatile organic compounds (VOCs), estimated carbon dioxide and relative humidity, and sends alerts and tips when air quality is poor. Note the word "estimated" for CO2. Tom's Guide found the feature "of limited use": it shows a Clean-to-High scale with suggestions, rather than specific particulate counts. It is not a substitute for a smoke, carbon monoxide or radon detector.
Speaker and voice assistants
The Premium has a built-in speaker and microphones, with either Alexa or Siri active, one at a time. Siri has extra requirements: ecobee states it needs iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 or later and a HomePod or HomePod mini on software version 15 or later. Without a HomePod, plan on Alexa or no voice assistant.
Do not buy it as a music speaker. Tom's Guide compared its thin sound to the original Echo Dot, and reported that Alexa sometimes sent music to the thermostat instead of a nearby Echo.
Ecosystems and connectivity
ecobee lists Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and IFTTT, and shows Google Assistant among supported platforms. Wireless is dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz and a/n/ac at 5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.0 and a 915 MHz radio.
For Apple Home, control away from home, sharing and automations need an Apple home hub. Apple's current guidance names HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV. Apple: set up a home hub.
Energy savings claims
ecobee advertises savings of "up to 26%" on annual heating and cooling costs. Read the conditions: the comparison is against holding the thermostat at 72°F all the time, and ecobee's "up to $284" a year figure comes from its own April 2021 analysis of customers, with the note that "annual savings will vary." If you already use a programmed schedule, expect less. ecobee's launch announcement says the thermostat is ENERGY STAR certified. HomeTenet has not measured savings.
Security features and subscriptions
The thermostat can act as a hub for ecobee door and window sensors and as a siren. ecobee's free Core plan covers motion and door or window alerts. Smoke alarm listening, where the thermostat's microphones listen for an existing smoke alarm sounding and alert your phone, is listed under the paid Plus and Advanced plans, and professional monitoring is a paid add-on on top of those. ecobee security plans.
Smoke alarm listening depends on your existing smoke alarms working. It does not detect smoke itself.
Privacy
The Premium has microphones and occupancy sensing, and its air quality and occupancy data go to ecobee's app. If you enable Alexa or Siri, those services' own privacy terms also apply. Review the microphone setting and ecobee's current privacy policy during setup. HomeTenet has not audited the device's data handling.

Frequently asked questions
Does the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium need a C-wire?
It needs constant 24 VAC power. If your wall has no C-wire, the included Power Extender Kit can provide it on compatible systems without running a new wire. It is installed at the HVAC equipment; check your wiring with ecobee’s compatibility checker first.
Does it work with Apple Home?
Yes. ecobee lists Apple HomeKit. Remote access and automations in Apple Home need an Apple home hub, and using Siri on the thermostat itself needs a HomePod or HomePod mini.
Do I need a subscription?
Not for heating and cooling control, the app, the room sensor or the air quality monitor. ecobee lists smoke alarm listening, video history and professional monitoring under paid security plans.
Will it really save 26%?
That is ecobee's "up to" figure compared with holding 72°F constantly. Your result depends on your climate, equipment and current habits.
Does it support Matter?
Matter is not listed on ecobee's product page for this model.

Safety and installation
Turn off power to your heating and cooling system at the breaker before removing an old thermostat or opening the equipment to fit the Power Extender Kit. Photograph and label existing wires first. If you see thick wires, wire nuts or a label of 120 V or 240 V, stop and have the wiring assessed: these can indicate line-voltage equipment, which this thermostat is not designed for. Follow ecobee's instructions and applicable local codes, check your lease before changing a thermostat, and hire a licensed HVAC technician or electrician if you are unsure. The air quality monitor and smoke alarm listening do not replace working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Homeowner safety disclaimer.
