Privacy Policy & Disclaimers

Last updated: October 8, 2026.

HomeTenet covers smart home automation, security, and ecosystem compatibility. This page explains affiliate relationships, website privacy, and the limits of our security and installation guidance.

Affiliate disclosure and editorial independence

HomeTenet may earn commissions when you buy through qualifying links on this site. A purchase through a commission-bearing link creates a financial relationship between HomeTenet and the retailer. We do not accept payment for positive reviews, and our editorial ratings are our own.

Sponsored content, complimentary products, loans, and other material relationships must be disclosed where they relate to an article. A footer policy does not replace a clear disclosure near a recommendation.

Our three disclosure layers

  1. Before the first shopping link: A visible disclosure box explains that HomeTenet may earn a commission from purchases through links in that article.
  2. Beside each commission-bearing retailer button: A plain-language note reads “Paid link — HomeTenet may earn a commission.” The note stays visible on mobile and is not hidden in a tooltip or behind another click.
  3. In the site footer: A persistent link leads to this page alongside a brief commission notice. These disclosures reinforce each other.
Article disclosure: HomeTenet may earn a commission if you buy through links in this article. Our recommendations reflect our editorial evaluation.

Where Amazon Associates links are used, the required identification statement is displayed clearly: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” This wording is required for Amazon participation; it does not claim that every link on HomeTenet is an Amazon link.

Homeowner smart security liability disclaimer

HomeTenet provides general editorial information, not a property-specific security assessment, professional installation service, code certification, or legal advice. A product recommendation is not a guarantee against intrusion, injury, fire, lockout, service interruption, or data loss. Device behavior can change with installation conditions, firmware, batteries, network availability, and vendor services.

Local fire codes and safe exit

Before changing door hardware or automations, confirm the applicable fire, building, accessibility, tenancy, and emergency-egress requirements with your local authority and an appropriately qualified installer. Requirements depend on the property and jurisdiction. Do not obstruct emergency exits or rely on internet access, a phone, or an automation as the only way to leave a home. Maintain and practice an escape plan appropriate to the household.

Installation and lock maintenance

Follow the manufacturer’s installation, maintenance, and battery instructions. Check door alignment, latch engagement, manual operation, and backup access after installation and periodically thereafter. Have binding, damaged, or unreliable hardware assessed by a qualified locksmith or installer. Do not force a mechanism or modify safety-critical hardware based solely on an online guide.

Device data privacy and security

Review the manufacturer’s privacy policy, recording permissions, storage and retention options, encryption claims, account controls, and subscription terms before installation. Consider household members, visitors, neighbors, and applicable recording laws. Local storage does not by itself establish that all processing is local or that a system is immune to compromise. Use supported software, install security updates, and enable strong authentication where available.

Responsibility and limits

You are responsible for selecting, installing, maintaining, and using devices appropriately for your property. Seek qualified advice when the consequences involve personal safety, emergency access, electrical work, or regulated installation. To the extent permitted by applicable law, HomeTenet disclaims responsibility for losses arising from reliance on general editorial information or third-party products and services. Nothing on this page excludes rights or liabilities that cannot lawfully be excluded.
